PLANTS
Packing plants for export is a careful and work intensive process, based on the knowledge of rules and practices of the exporting and importing countries. Plant disease prevention and care at our nursery count as much as the nature of the soil in which the plants have grown, which effects the survival rate of plants sent bare roots. see some of our Packing techniques experiments reported and our Focus page. We can ship the plants potted in a mix of coconut bits and fiber if accepted. We request from the importer an import permit stating the conditions of import : we are not liable for interceptions when the shipment itself – not the intercepted plants only - was illegal or subject to an abnormal phytosanitary risk due to importer’s misinformation. Phytosanitary laws and restrictions with species often change. Our liability is limited to the consequences of interceptions due to diseases or insects, upon receipt of the official certificate stating the cause of the interception. General rules for the EU – Directive 2002 36 - , which is from 2002, can be downloaded in Acrobat format :

Directive 2002 French
Directive 2002 English

Information on Permits with the USDA are at : http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ppq/permits/ The plants travel with a Phytosanitary certificate in the pouch, we email details for clearance of the freight at the customs to the consignee the day of departure : invoice, packing list , Phytosanitary certificate and Air Way Bill. ( AWB). If the original documents have been lost during transport copies can be submitted to the Agriculture department and the Customs. After the cargo has arrived, the first step is to take the original documents from the pouch at the airline office at the airport. Plants protected by the Washington Convention on endangered species need a CITES :. Step 1 : we forward by fax to the importer our copy of permit to export the CITES plants in the proforma. Step 2 : the importer, in order to obtain an import permit sends a request with the copy of our export permit to the relevant authority ( CITES office ) of the importing country. Step 3 : once we have received from the importer ( by fax or by registerd letter ) the copy of the import permit, we can request the CITES in Bangkok. It can only be delivered the day of departure, while the import permit remains valid for a long period of time. The CITES travels with the Phytosanitary certificate and copy of the import permit in the pouch. Dowload a copy of the CITES below ( Adobe ).

Tracking of booking and flight : The AWB no has a prefix that indicates the airline : for instance in the AWB no : 081 – 3382 6962 , 081 stands for the Quantas airline. The site http://cargotracking.utopiax.org/ has compiled the tracking sites of all airlines.

Insurance of live plants. An insurance company would only cover the consequences of an aircraft crash. Hence live plants can’t be reasonably insured. Confirmation of booking : Bangkok international airport being second to none in South East Asia, we benefit from a wide choice of direct flights , often within 48 hours after booking. If transit cannot be avoided, we make sure with our freight agent that the plants won't be carried by trucking to the destination airport. Finding space in the planes may sometimes require earlier booking than usual : for some reasons some departures are cancelled and generate shifts of the freight. December, January and March are the busy months, offices at the airport take about 10 days off in April.Very few freight agents agree to forward perishables and even less accept a " Freight Collect " system ( transport charge paid after arrival ). We secure our business - and guarantee our freight agent - by requesting that the price of the plants and transport cost be paid before departure. From Bangkok, Postal EMS excepted, Express Courrier ( DHL, FEDEX, UPS etc. ) do not accept plant packages. Although Postal EMS packages depart always on time in Bangkok, long delays often occur upon arrival because of clearance at customs : we don’t recommend using the post office for international imports of plants. EMS doesn’t refund money for problems with live plant packages.

Door delivery : Unless your agent has a partner in Bangkok, we cannot arrange for door delivery of our live plants : the freight has to be sent from Bangkok airport to your closest airport, hence your own cargo agent would deliver from your airport to your door.
